Riven DVD edition makes use of your local Quicktime installation which of course you can customize (mine is an old 6.5 version I think I found on GoG's website). CONCLUSION: DO NOT BUY ON STEAM AND GET THE DVD EDITION. After playing Riven, it isn't as disappointing as expected, though it still isn't great. The game plays almost exactly like Myst. There's no 360 degree movement, like 3D shooters, or screen movement like The 7th Guest. So Im not sure where else to look for tips. I downloaded Riven from GOG and cannot overcome the 'crashing when saving' problem that seems really common with this version. Things I have tried so far:

-Running in Compatibility Mode (XP SP3 and XP SP2) -Installing QuickTime 6.5.2 -Running as an Administrator -Uninstalling MS Groove 2007 -Renaming the save file -Creating a new save file -Setting the affinity to a single CPU processor (CPU 0 FWIW)

Fiddling with display resolution and water animation stopped it from crashing during gameplay (for the most part). Im on the Village Island, in the holding cell above the Wahrk trap. I accept that in the grand scheme of the game, its not too far, but Ive invested maybe 10 hours into troubleshooting for like 1-3 hours of actual play.
